Series Books

So, I've heard a lot of people bashing on series books recently. Why is it that everyone seems to think that a book that doesn't end in a cliffhanger, but still gets made into a series, was only given a sequel(s) for the money? Why can't a book just wrap up well at the end, but still merit a second novel?

I personally avoid standalones. I don't know why, and I haven't always been this way, but I just don't really enjoy books as much when I don't know that I'll be able to squee over book 2 and follow the characters through however many books the author/publisher chooses to release.

Maybe I like following the characters that I've already connected to, or maybe I like knowing that I'm going to love this book because I've loved the first three (usually). I'm not sure what it is. I just love series. Even though I wish the plural could be 'serieses' so that I could differentiate better. Or maybe 'seriesi.' Or just 'seri.'

So, dear readers, do you prefer series/serieses/seriesi/seri or standalones? Why? Which plural of 'series' is your favorite (one of mine, or something you've made up, doesn't matter)?
