REVIEW: The Electric Church by Jeff Somers

Avery Cates is a very bad man. Some might call him a criminal. He might even be a killer - for the Right Price. But right now, Avery Cates is scared. He's up against the Monks: cyborgs with human brains, enhanced robotic bodies, and a small arsenal of advanced weaponry. Their mission is to convert anyone and everyone to the Electric Church. But there is just one snag. Conversion means death.

Science fiction is a genre that I love to death but don't read nearly often enough, so when I went on vacation to San Diego, this was the first book I picked to take with me, and it definitely lived up to my expectations.

Avery Cates was a freakin' awesome MC, and every word out of his mouth was a gem of amazingly witty sarcasm. The guy was seriously a genius. Even though he thinks he's bad, Avery is one of the only good guys in this distopic sci-fi, and it shows.

His friends, while slightly grungy and definitely bottom-feeders, were great, too. I loved how loyal they all were to each other while spewing fountains of bull about how bad they were. They were a great group, and it was so sad to see that not all of them made it through the book :'(

If you haven't read much sci-fi and you're looking for an in, or even if you've read it all, this is a really good book for anyone who's interested in the genre.
