Reading Update

Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • Didn't get any more of The Midnight Mayor read. This is a theme, you guys. Still a theme a week later, apparently.
  • No progress This Side of the Grave.
  • Very little progress on A Clash of Kings.
  • I hate myself.
  • 9874876239850938 textbook pages (and about 1/3 of the second HP book) from 19 different textbooks for only five classes.
This week in books:
  • Get at least halfway through A Clash of Kings. Second week on the list :/
  • Finish HP 2.
  • Don't read for fun when I should be reading textbooks. This will stay on the list for the rest of the semester, I think.
Wishful thinking:
  • Read the last 3/4 of The Midnight Mayor. This will might happen eventually. *waffles*

That's all for this week. What are you planning on reading? Any good books you've read lately?

REVIEW: Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis

Stan Markowski is a Detective Sergeant on the Scranton PD's Supernatural Crimes Investigation Unit.

Like the rest of America, Scranton's got an uneasy 'live and let unlive' relationship with the supernatural. But when a vamp puts the bite on an unwilling victim, or some witch casts the wrong kind of spell, that's when they call Markowski. He carries a badge. Also, a crucifix, some wooden stakes, a big vial of holy water, and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets.

Book: Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis
Release Date: July 26, 2011
Format: Mass market paperback
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: Occult Crimes Unit Investigation, #1
Obtained: From the publisher in exchange for an honest review
Rating:PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket (5 Zombies)

I picked up Hard Spell mostly just looking for a quick, easy read, but what I got was so much more than I was expecting! It was definitely fast-paced an exciting, but also a lot deeper than I thought it would be. The most welcome surprise was the amazing friendship between Stan and his new partner,  Karl Renfer, who I absolutely adored.

I've heard some people complain about "swearing and sexism" in this series, but I didn't really notice anything terribly offensive, although I do understand where the overly-sensitive might find reasons to whine about a good book.

As far as fast, fun supernatural detective series go, this one, IMO, is up there with The Dresden Files in terms of awesome. I am definitely hooked on this series, and I can't wait to get to the second book, which is staring eagerly from my TBR mountain in the corner of the bedroom. I DEFINITELY recommend it!!

REVIEW: Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward

Few authors give readers such a “powerful rush”* as #1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward does in her phenomenal books of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Now she returns to that fiercely intoxicating world in a new novel of a woman’s journey from terrifying enslavement to an erotic rapture that proves equally dangerous…

Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

Book: Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward
Release Date: March 29, 2011
Format: Hardcover
Genre: Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood, #9
Obtained: Purchased
Rating:PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket (4 Zombies)

I read the first four chapters of Lover Unleashed back in 2011 when it came out originally, but that was around the time I was getting really tired of PNR in general and vampires in specific, so I had to put it down before I decided to give up on the series altogether. I'm really glad that I gave it some time, however, because I still love the BDB and I can't wait to get back into the series with the next book, which is already out.

Now that I'm getting back to all of my old favorite PNR series, the Black Dagger Brotherhood books were an obvious choice to read ASAP, and Manny and Payne's story didn't disappoint, although I feel like Butch and V really stole the show with a little competition from Qhuinn.

Some of the sex scenes made me laugh, TBH, but they weren't as annoying as I've read in other PNR series, and I could mostly skim through them without missing anything important after the first few (for obvious reasons, if you've read the book).

I had kind of forgotten some things about the Lessening Society and the new vampires that have been introduced lately, but Lover Unleashed did a great job of easing me back into the BDB world without confusing the crap out of me, which was pretty awesome.

I'm not even going to bother with recommending the BDB series because pretty much everyone has read them already, but if you haven't checked out the spinoff series Fallen Angels, those are also really good.
