Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • Finished Assassin's Quest by Robin Hobb, it was a great end to the series and I can't wait to start her Liveship Traders series as soon as finals are over.
  • Still working on my A Clash of Kings reread. I probably won't read anymore of this until Summer Break.
  • Slowly working my way through stalled out on The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. Still. I've been loving it, but I HAVE NO TIME ALKDJFA;OIJFAOHUODO
This week in books:
  • Get at least halfway through A Clash of Kings. OMG. This will be on my list forever. And a day, apparently. Not happening until school gets out.
  • Finish Jews Without Money. O_O oops. Double oops.
  • Get at least 300 pages into The Way of Kings, which is a 1252 page behemoth. Second third fourth time on the list.
  • Don't read for fun when I should be reading textbooks. This will stay on the list for the rest of the semester. Only a week and a half until this is off the list!!!
Wishful thinking:
  • The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. Hahaha psht no. This will never happen. Or will it? Second third week's the charm???

So, I get out of school next Tuesday as you may have noticed after all the times I mentioned it in this post. Between now and then, I have three papers to write, three finals to take, and two presentations to give (you'd think I was only taking three classes, but I have five lol). But as soon as Summer starts, I will have so much time for reading and fun be staffing Anime Expo, possibly attending a day or two of Comic-Con, definitely attending all of ArmadilloCon, turning 19, preparing for Fall formal recruitment with my sorority sisters, visiting my family in Texas for a few weeks, and trying to get a job.

Do you guys have any fun plans for this summer?

That's all for this week. What are you planning on reading? Any good books you've read lately?

Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • I've been reading a lot of steampunk lately, so I started last week off with The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack, which was beyond amazing.
  • To give me a short break from the often long-winded steampunk, I also read Hard Spell, which was also really good, which kind of surprised me because I wasn't expecting much out of it. Looking forward to reading the sequel to both books.
  • I'm about 75% into The Diamond Age, which pretty much everyone other than me has read.
This week in books:
  • Finish The Diamond Age
  • Maybe read The Lies of Locke Lamora, but since I have family in town for the holidays, maybe not.
Wishful thinking:
  • The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man
  • Evil Dark (sequel to Hard Spell)

Last week in books:
  • I finally finished The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, which was a reread and sucked just as much this time as it did the first :/
  • Still working on On the Road by Jack Kerouac, but not because I don't like it. I think what's taking me so long is that I mostly read in my breaks between classes, which can be pretty short :'(
This week in books:
  • Finish On the Road. I think I have less than 50 pages left, so no problems there.
  • Start Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.
Wishful thinking:
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Chbosky. Still.
  • Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac.

Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • I've been reading a lot for my English classes next semester, so last week was a lot of literary fiction.
  • The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, Playing in the Dark by Toni Morrison, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson.
This week in books:
  • I just started reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac, which I hope to finish, but I mostly started it to avoid the next book on my list:
  • Beloved by Toni Morrison. I've never been a fan of Morrison, but this is my last school book, so I need to get it read soon.
  • Soulbound by Heather Brewer, because I'm not only a litfic nut.
Wishful thinking:
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Chbosky.

Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • Read a little more Game of Thrones. So far, it's really good, but slow, which is pretty normal for fantasy, imo.
  • Still haven't finished Hyperspace, but I'm going at a pretty steady pace.
This week in books:
  • Finish Hyperspace.
  • Get at least halfway through A Game of Thrones.
Wishful thinking:
  • Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Waiting On Wednesday (61)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by the amazing Jill at Breaking the Spine. Each week, participating bloggers will make a post about a book whose publication they're eagerly awaiting.

This week, I'm featuring Soulbound by Heather Brewer.
What's worse than being blackmailed to attend a hidden school where you're treated like a second-class citizen? How about nearly getting eaten by a monster when you arrive? Or learning that your soulmate was killed in a centuries-old secret war? And then there's the evil king who's determined to rule the world unless you can stop him...

Meet Kaya, a young woman with the power to heal and the determination to fight. But struggle as she will, she remains tied to three very different men: a hero who has forsaken glory, a tyrannical ruler who wants to use Kaya, and a warrior who's stolen her heart. Kaya learns the hard way that some ties can't be broken...and blood is the strongest bond of all.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • I only managed to read the prologue for A Game of Thrones so far because I've been super busy studying for finals and getting ready for my commencement ceremony next Saturday, but I've been sufficiently hooked.
  • I've also been reading Hpyerspace by Michio Kaku, which is a popular science book about dimensions above the three we can experience. It's kind of awesome. I'm about halfway through right now. I don't think I'll be reviewing it on the blog, though, because it isn't fiction.
This week in books:
  • I won't kid myself and say that I hope to finish the books I've already started, but I'd like to get at least a few hundred pages into A Game of Thrones and maybe if I'm lucky finish Hyperspace.
Wishful thinking:
  • Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Waiting on Wednesday (60)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by the amazing Jill at Breaking the Spine. Each week, participating bloggers will make a post about a book whose publication they're eagerly awaiting.

This week, I'm featuring Level 2 by Lenore Appelhans.

Since her untimely death the day before her eighteenth birthday, Felicia Ward has been trapped in Level 2, a stark white afterlife located between our world and the next. Along with her fellow prisoners, Felicia passes the endless hours downloading memories and mourning what she’s lost—family, friends, and the boy she loved, Neil.

Then a girl in a neighboring chamber disappears, and nobody but Felicia seems to recall she existed in the first place. Something is obviously very wrong. When Julian—a dangerously charming guy Felicia knew in life—comes to offer Felicia a way out, she learns the truth: a rebellion is brewing to overthrow the Morati, the guardians of Level 2.

Felicia is reluctant to trust Julian, but then he promises what she wants the most—to be with Neil again—if only she’ll join the rebels. Suspended between Heaven and Earth, Felicia finds herself in the center of an age-old struggle between good and evil. As memories from her life come back to haunt her, and as the Morati hunt her down, Felicia will discover it’s not just her own redemption at stake… but the salvation of all mankind.

This week, I'm featuring Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent.

He didn't get it. The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school...  Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent "recovering," she's back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend. But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won't keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn't just gambling with her own life....

REVIEW: A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin

For Matthew Swift, today is not like any other day. It is the day on which he returns to life.

Two years after his untimely death, Matthew Swift finds himself breathing once again, lying in bed in his London home.

Except that it's no longer his bed, or his home. And the last time this sorcerer was seen alive, an unknown assailant had gouged a hole so deep in his chest that his death was irrefutable...despite his body never being found.

He doesn't have long to mull over his resurrection though, or the changes that have been wrought upon him. His only concern now is vengeance. Vengeance upon his monstrous killer and vengeance upon the one who brought him back.

Book: A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin
Release Date: April 6, 2009
Format: Mass market paperback
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: Matthew Swift, #1
Obtained: Purchased
Rating:PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket (4 Zombies)

A Madness of Angels took me quite some time to read because it's one of those books that has no urgency to it, but not in a bad way. It was a really good book, which is why I gave it four out of five zombies, but it was very slow and deliberate, taking lots of page time to describe feelings and people, and especially London, which was almost its own character.

Matthew Swift is my favorite kind of character, one who is absolutely batshit insane. Of course, for someone who's been gruesomely murdered and then come back from the dead not entirely himself, he's holding it together surprisingly well. For a normal human being, though, he's just plain crazy.

I think that if you don't mind the slow, descriptive writing that is usually found in hard fantasy, then A Madness of Angels is a very provocative, interesting book that's well worth a read.

Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • I finally finished Black Heart by Holly Black, which really picked up at the end. I think it was a fitting ending for the series, but I'm really gonna miss these books. Can't wait for Black's next series!
  • On a whim, I picked up a review book from my pile, Balkan Magic by Emigh Cannaday, which is kind of slow, but gets good just often enough to hold my attention and keep me from giving up on it. And it's long, too.
This week in books:
  • Finish Balkan Magic by Emigh Cannaday
  • City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare
Wishful thinking:
  • Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
  • A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

That's all for this week. What are you planning on reading? Any good books you've read lately? Also, happy Memorial Day!

Reading Update

Last week in books:
  • Finished Doubletake by Rob Thurman. Five zombies. Review coming within the next few days. I'm soooooo glad I got this book for review, because I never pick favorites, but this series is definitely my favorite. Yes, I just contradicted myself. Even logic fails when faced with Cal Leandros.
This week in books:
  • Starting Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs today. I love the Mercy Thompson series, but I'm still two books behind because I have an entire shelf of unread books, plus school stuff and ebooks. I read the graphic novels based off of this series a few days ago and just had to read this one next.
  • Hoping to finish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson as soon as I finish Silver Borne, but I may read something else first.
Wishful thinking:
  • Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs
  • Grimspace by Ann Aguirre
In other news, I officially have my first college degree, an A.A. in Language Arts. My last semester of community college starts on Wednesday (I'm getting a few more units before I transfer). Yay! Can't wait to start on my B.A. The extra work was definitely worth it to graduate before I'm 18.

That's all for this week. What are you planning on reading? Any good books you've read lately?
